Our two concerts in Arizona at the end of July were just wonderful. Info here...all hosted by AMAZ Radio.
That's me on the left trying to find the right fret while Reno McCormick, Tracy Newman, and Judy Montgomery watch with glee.
Thanks! Thanks! And Thanks to all of you who were able to come out to Altadena and see our show at the Coffee Gallery last Sunday night. We packed the house and your support is overwhelming. Art
Wonderful event. Dave Harvey keeps the flame.

Art Podell - A Folksinger’s Diary
was a great success. Thanks to all of you who came. Our cast of several made an evening I was proud of. 'The Enhancements' (Juanice Charmaine and Judy Montgomery on vocals and Sherry Barnett on uke) were a breath of smiling fresh air. David Jackson, my co-host out-charms even me. Bill Berry and Barry Kane hit home runs. We'll be doing our next show soon enough and we'll be announcing here. A blatant promo hint: Tracy Newman will be our featured guest for the next go-round, nimbly named Episode #3

Great time in Big Bear singing with Joe Frazier (Chad Mitchel Trio), George Grove (Kingston Trio), Jim Moran (Chilly Winds), and a few guest pop-ins. This was the folk music I remember before everything got muddled. The event was a fund-raiser for St. Columbas Episcopal Church in Big Bear, California. 'Father Joe' Frazier is the Vicar of the church and invited us to sing. One day to rehearse, flying by the seat of our pants, singing only the stuff that we loved- Tom Paxton's "Last Thing On My Mind", Bob Gibson's signature song "This Little Light Of Mine", and the song we wish Steve Goodman had written thirty years earlier,"City of New Orleans", etc. etc.... you get the idea. Of course we closed with Woodie Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" and Joe wouldn't stand for any encore other than the Ed McCurdy standard "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream".
We had so much fun, that we're talking about doing it again... soon... fingers crossed.

Here's a picture taken at the 60th birthday celebration party for Bob Zucker on January 30th in Queen Creek, Arizona, the day after the Kingston Trio concert in Gilbert Arizona. Bob is one of those unique individuals who grasps the importance of continuing the American acoustic music tradition. His radio station atwww.amazradio.org features local and national acoustic artists. Sooner or later, I’ll write some more about him and our brief association.
Left to right:
Jerry Yester, from the Lovin' Spoonful playing his incredible wooden banjo. It's tuned halfway between a dulcimer and a toaster and only Jerry can play it (clever of him). The sound makes you want to pack up, leave home, move to the back woods and start cooking corn mash in the back yard. Jerry lives in north east Arkansas and tours with the Lovin Spoonful. When Jerry was living in Laurel Canyon in the sixties, my dog Dink used to visit him regularly and leave 'presents' on his lawn.
Larry Ramos: Larry is the lead singer and primary genius behind The Association. Larry sang with me in the New Christy Minstrels for years. I first met Larry in 1962 at a club in California called the Satyr and invited him to join the Christies early on. As I recall, we ended up hating each other back then but now, neither of us can remember why. Every time we try, we start laughing.
Darrell Effinger: Daryl sang with the N.C.M. for a while and is a genuine folkie
from Sacramento California. I'd add some more, but this was the first time I met him. He seems OK.
Rick Dougherty: Rick is one of the current members of the Kingston Trio. Rick took Nick Reynolds's place and has a tenor voice that I would sell my house to have. He was also Glenn Yarborough for several years when he sang with the restructured Limelighters. Get him aside and he plays guitar chords that would disqualify him from the three-chord folk society in a heartbeat.
Finally, me: Fortunately my back is to the camera so that you can't see the envy I am displaying by being in the company of working folk singers
Concert!
June 28th, 2014: Big Bear Lake, California.
Fund raising concert for St. Columba's Church in tribute to Father Joe Frazier, friend, fellow folksinger, member of The Chad Mitchell Trio. Joe passed away two months ago, and George Grove (Kingston Trio), Ron Greenstein (Chad Mitchell Trio), Jim Moran (my co-host on KPFK FM Pacifica Radio), and Judy Montgomery will be honoring our 4 year tradition of these concerts. It is with the love and honor we all feel towards Joe's loving congregation and for our dear friend's memory that we perform. Stay tuned here for details.
